"27. What are you most afraid of
dissapointing the family."

Hmm. I, too, am the youngest in my family, and for years this was one of my biggest fears. In an effort to not disappoint my family, I ended up doing what I thought my family wanted.

I went to Purdue because my Dad and brother went there. I was a Chemical Engineer because my brother was one. I went to grad school because my Dad and brother did. I married young because my brother married his college sweet-heart.

Eventually, I realized that these were not the things I wanted to do, only what I perceived my family wanted me to do.

It seemed easy to follow footsteps and not stray off the course. It made me feel like I was making others happy, when I fact I was not happy myself.

In some ways, I broke free of those self imposed chains in my mid-20s by not pursuing my doctorate. In other ways, it has taken until last week's epiphany to break those bonds.

What has taken me 30+ years to figure out is that my family will love me regardless of what I accomplish OR FAIL AT. The important part is that I am doing what I want because I want to.

I hope you can see this point, while you are young.

I know your family will always love you, and being the youngest, I know I will always love you.

Live YOUR life, and we will all be proud of you.

I'm to sexy for my chert said...

Wow, he made me cry too! And everything he said is true. You aren't going to disappoint me.

(I erased everything else that I wrote because it didn't matter. Only the last sentence up there matters. I hope you know that!)

Can't disappoint me either! I love you as you are. (that should be said out loud-- as you are, period.) I think we all live with the fear of failing others. But sometimes our perceived failures end up setting us up for our greatest successes!

oh whatever. just like i told you 6 years ago, we were so excited to be getting a neice/nephew/grandchild that we really didn't care HOW it happened!

maybe i need to do a blog on "things happen for a reason" and start with my divorce from branton.

hum, i just may do that...
